What You Should Know About Brake Pads

Sep 01, 2021

When selling brake pads, car owners often ask the repair shop some questions, for example, what is the quality of the brake pads, is it soft or hard, and how many kilometers can it run? Or whether there will be noise, black and gray can not be dropped. Moreover, the answer of the maintenance master or the boss to the customer is different, and there are all kinds of strange things.

In fact, as a more important safety-related part of a car, brake pads have strict standards and procedures in their production process. Some of these questions also have standard answers. Here, I will know and share with you. If you simply look at the brake pads themselves and do not involve installation, the editor believes that there are the following problems.

One: How many kilometers can the brake pads run?

The replacement period of brake pads is usually determined according to the specific conditions of the vehicle, the type of vehicle, the weight of the vehicle, and the brand of brake pads.

For example, in car A, brake pads of 50,000 to 60,000 kilometers can be used, while in car B, there may be only 20,000 kilometers. This is a very common situation. Therefore, in sales, if a customer asks: How long can your brake pads be used? Then we must first understand the cars that customers use on a daily basis. It should be particularly emphasized that very important influencing factors also include the frequency of parking and driving on the road. For example, a car that has been driving on city roads for a long time has a significantly shorter replacement cycle for brake pads than a car that has been driving on a highway for a long time. For example, the replacement brake cycle of a taxi must be shorter than that of an ordinary private car; a car driving on a mountain road The cycle is shorter than that of cars on flat roads; the replacement cycle of trucks is much shorter than that of light trucks.

The 30,000 kilometers of ordinary cars is a minimum guarantee. There is an important concept here: 30,000 kilometers refers to the better use time of the braking effect, not to mention that 30,000 kilometers will wear out. The domestic habit is often to replace the brake pads when the brake pads are worn to the brake disc.

2: Are the brake pads soft or hard?

This question contains an important concept. That is, the friction coefficient of the brake pads. The friction force refers to the value on the outer packaging box of the brake pad, such as 0.38 or 0.42.

Generally speaking, a brake pad with a higher friction coefficient is relatively "soft" due to the smaller force required for braking. Conversely, the "harder" the coefficient of friction is smaller because the force required for braking is greater. Brake soft and hard is a relative concept, not the harder the better, or the softer the better, too hard is prone to noise, too soft is not wear-resistant. Moderate hardness and friction coefficient matching the model is the best choice! Generally, the coefficient of friction is between 0.38-0.42.
